Hello

Welcome to my online portfolio and blog. I document my adventures as a fashion designer and lover of life lived in color.

Hope you have a nice stay!

Vancouver Fashion Week March 2015

My latest excitement and newest upcoming adventure: IN CANADA!

At 3:48 on a brisk December afternoon, a tremendous surprise waited for me in my inbox. I was on my way home from the fabric store and was expecting nothing too exciting. I skimmed over my new messages--the majority of which were ads. Then my heart stopped. The words "Vancouver Fashion week" leapt from the screen and hit me square between the eyes like a 2x4. I eagerly jammed my thumb down on the tiny print and proceeded to read the words that I never expected to be reading as a freckle faced little 15-year-old. The email was an invitation to participate in Vancouver Fashion Week this upcoming spring. It said they had reviewed my collection and were very impressed with my work, which surprised me even more. Press names like VOUGE and ELLE would be in attendance along with dozens of others. It would be a huge event.

Then I got to the end, where it read,"entry fees starting at 3,800 Canadian dollars" and I wanted to cry. I'm 15 years old! I still have to buy a car and pay for my gas money/insurance. I can't go around spending that kind of money! I felt my heart sink, and I knew that there was no way I could accept this invitation. My mom was in the driver's seat right next to me during all of this, and naturally I had read her the message.

"Well, too bad..." I said, "would've been pretty cool." I let my phone drop to my lap and stared out the window.

She just looked at me and said, "No, I think you should do it." I was shocked! "Really, you've been saving money since you were five years old, why not?" We both kind of sat in silence for a few minutes and by the time we got back to my house I had made my mind up. This opportunity is going to be worth gold in my portfolio. I'll get to work with people from all over the world and show my designs in one of the biggest fashion weeks in the Americas.

The cost is kind of a setback of course, but God gave me a nice little cherry on top of this excitement. I called the office in charge of VFW and ended up chatting with their president for a few minutes. I started to tell him about my business and when I mentioned that I was 15 years old, the man was blown away. "You don't sound 15!" he said. A few minutes after I got off the phone with him I got another email giving me 20% off the entry fee "due to my youth and enthusiasm." At this point I knew that this was meant to be.

I sold my horse, Belle, who was once my biggest dream, but as I'm growing older I have found out that sometimes you have to give up old dreams in pursuit of new ones. Between the discount, the money from Belle, and money from working on the farm in the summer I am all paid up and ready to go.

I will be showing 16 looks on March 17th with hair and makeup and models all included in the package. So here I am--starting off the new year with a new grand adventure and a messy studio that I have been sewing away in all of Christmas break--all registered for the big show! Happy New Year to you and I hope 2015 brings you as much excitement as it has promised me, and I want to say thank you for making my 2014 so great through all of your support and encouragement.

This is Belle, who for the longest time was my best friend, and although I'll miss her so much, I will never forget the memories made with her.
