Hello

Welcome to my online portfolio and blog. I document my adventures as a fashion designer and lover of life lived in color.

Hope you have a nice stay!

Meet Anita

Hey guys! Meet Anita! Not only is this girl flipping' gorgeous, but she's also got some amazing stories to tell. This summer I am hoping to start featuring other artists from the industry -- I want my blog to be a window into the fashion world. I want it to be a place where people can read about others who have stepped out of the cultural norms and into the realm of the unknown. Into in industry where the competition is high and the income is often low. But that's not what it's about. This is fashion. It's about stories and adventures and the diversity of people who can come together to "make." To make magic, to make memories, to make art. Let me know what you think, and stay tuned for more adventures from Anita! Until next time,  Kate

Introducing Model/Blogger Anita Mwiruki

About Me

I am Anita Mwiruki of fashion blog, Fashion by Anita. I'm 22 years old, born in Tanzania but would say I'm from Ohio.

I moved from Africa to South Carolina when I was four and stayed there for seven years before moving to Ohio for 10 years. I've lived in Seattle for two years now, and am getting ready for a new venture here soon.

I currently am not working anywhere or blogging very much as I am getting ready to start a new adventure in Fairbanks, Alaska with my other half.

I first got into art when I took photography class as a junior in high school. I went from taking the photo to having my photo taken when a friend of mine asked me to model for him for his photography class.

I never really took it seriously in the beginning but slowly grew to love styling myself. I never like to refer to myself as a model because I'm no Coco Rocha or Naomi Campbell.

When I started blogging I focused more so on styling myself with clothes from my closet, when I made the move from Ohio to Seattle I began collaborating more with local designers and boutiques.

The Industry

Fashion is more than clothes. It's a story of the people who make the clothes and what inspires them -- learning these things, and hearing the stories has become one of my favorite parts. I've been blogging/modeling for about 3 years off and on, it's more time consuming then it seems: planning shoots, taking the actual photos, writing the blog, posting on social media, updating a website.

Some of the hardest things about this industry are being African American, and liking food.

As most know, in fashion slim is in; however at 39 inches my hips do not lie. Though it can hinder what I can do at times, I do not let my size stop me from doing what I love. I am a big believer in dressing for your body type, and have been blessed to work with a lot of designers who aren't against girls with hips.

Something that some people may not know is how racist the fashion industry is, but being brown has made it hard at times. It is still a fact that events such as NYFW still don't use many models of color. Nothing in life is easy so I enjoy working with other artists who can appreciate my dark skin and curves.

Naomi Campbell, Coco Rocha, and Tyra Banks have been and continue to be my inspirations. I used to love watching America's Next Top Model and still enjoy watching videos of Coco Roach model to improve my poses.

So far my greatest pride and joy and adventure in this industry was being featured in Munaluchi, which is an African American inspired bridal magazine that can be found in Barnes n Noble. It was such an awesome feeling to be able to walk into a store, pick up a magazine and see myself in this magazine.

Outside of Fashion
I've picked up scrapbooking in the last year or so. It's a fun way to remember moments, and it gives me a chance to be behind the camera. I love taking photos of my own, mostly of nature but hope to expand to people also in the near future.
